What is it?
Scandium (Sc, atomic number 21) is classified with the rare earths because its chemical behavior and supply-chain characteristics track the lanthanides.
Its strategic value comes from the outsized effect of small scandium additions to aluminum.

How is it made?
Nearly all scandium is recovered as a by-product from:
