What is it?
Praseodymium (Pr, atomic number 59) is a light rare-earth metal. Commercially, it is closely linked with neodymium because the two elements occur together and are often sold as NdPr oxide for permanent-magnet production.
Praseodymium improves magnetic properties and strengthens selected aluminum and magnesium alloys.
How is it made?
Praseodymium follows the same rare-earth separation chain as neodymium:
ore → concentrate → chemical cracking/leaching → mixed rare-earth solution → solvent extraction → Pr oxide or NdPr oxide → metal/alloy → finished product
Its separation from neighboring rare earths requires complex chemical processing. This makes refining capability more strategically important than simple ore ownership.
Where is it produced?
China leads world rare-earth production and downstream processing.
